Six Eagles wrestlers advanced to state while scoring 135 team points for 4th at the Bi-District Regionals in Colville Saturday, Feb 11th.

Lakeside had three champions, including Jacob Ulland (106), Chase Fuson (160) and Justin Hause (195). Hootie Judd (113), Klint Brown (126) and Josh Judd (160) took second. Ben Dring (285) grabbed 5th and Andrew King (182) 6th to complete the Lakeside placing. Top 4 places advance

Lakeside girls win, now tied for second

Tayler Flemming hit a pair of free throws late in the game as Lakeside edged Newport (9-4, 1-3) 52-48 in Northeast A League girls basketball Tuesday night in Nine Mile Falls.

The Grizzlies tied the game in the final minute, but Flemming’s free throws gave the Eagles the lead for good. Flemming scored 13 points.

Jenna Widman had 15 points and 14 rebounds and Jocelyn Cook-Cox added 15 points for Lakeside (8-6, 3-1), which won the rebounding battle 37-25.

LAKESIDE BOYS AND GIRLS XC STATE CHAMPIONS!!

Both Lakeside Boys and Girls cross country teams dominated their respective races today in Pasco to each win the 2011 STATE XC CHAMPIONSHIP!
The Girls' first place win was the first ever for the Girls, who took 4th the last three years, while it was the 6th State Championship for the Boys. The Boys came in to the race as the defending 2010 State Champions.
The Eagles girls were led by FR Lindy Jacobson, who was 6th overall and set a new personal record of 18:53.6, scoring 6 team points. Three other Lakeside girls mounted the podium with Jacobson to receive a top 16 individual medal, including SR Vanessa Ahrendt (12th overall, 19:46, 10 TP), JR Sofie Marikis (15th, 19:49.7, 11 TP) and SO Megan Ahrendt (16th, 19:49.9, 12 TP). JR Mary Daniel rounded out the team scoring with her 27th individual place, running the course in 20:23.2 for 20 team points. SR Michelle Sobisky anted up 23 team points to the moot tie-breaker kitty with her 31st place finish, running the course in 20:34.4. FR Stefanie Marikis ran a 22:12.4 to come in 84th out of 143 runners.
Their team score of 59 points overwhelmed the field, with closest competitor, fellow NEA League member and defending 1A State Champion Riverside, coming in with 86 points and Northwest, home to individual winner Maddie Meyers (17:54.6) and second place finisher Hazel Carr (18:37), coming in with 92 points. King's took home the fourth place trophy with 118 points.
The boys scored 79 team points to also dominate the competition, with second place NEA member Colville earning 108 points, King's 109, and Charles Wright Academy 167.
The Eagles boys were paced by SO Ryan Coffman (10th individual, 16:36, 7 team points) and SR Michael Anderson (12th, 16:44, 10 TP), who were the Lakeside recipients of a top 16 individual medal. The leaders were closely followed by SR Jake Widman (18th, 16:52, 12 TP), SO JT Lauderdale (37th, 17:21, 25 TP), SO Donovan Dewey (38th, 17:24, 26 TP), JR Cody Constant (48th, 17:33, 32 tie-breaker team points) and SR Jimmy Spencer (79th out of 144, 17:57).

Lakeside (8-7, 5-3) battled League champ Newport (16-2, 7-1) for the District 7 championship Wednesday, Nov 2nd at the Gonzaga Prep soccer pitch but came up short in a 2-0 loss to settle for the #2 seed to Regionals.

The Eagles secured the right to host District 6/Caribou Trail League member #2 Cascade-Leavenworth this Saturday, Nov 5th at 2 pm for a state tournament seed.

NEA #1 Newport hosts CTL #3 Okanogan and NEA #3 Freeman, 3-1 winners over Colville in the final District 7 match Nov 2, travels to CTL #1 Cashmere.

WIAA to offer live blog, Twitter and Facebook updates and a highlight package

RENTON, Wash. – For the 24th-consecutive year, Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco, Wash., will be the site for the WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires State Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 5.

The state meet is set to begin at 9:30 a.m. with the wheelchair race. The event will conclude with the boys 4A race, which is slated to begin at 2:30 p.m. Tickets for the state cross country meet are $9 for adults and $7 for senior citizens and students. The meet consists of over 1,600 student-athletes representing 247 schools.

The WIAA will be offering a live blog on their website that will give up-to-date news and results of the 2011 state cross country meet. In addition to the Cover It Live feature, fans can also receive news and results from the state meet via the WIAA Twitter page (www.twitter.com/wiaawa) and on the WIAA Facebook page (www.facebook.com/wiaawa).

Following the event, a highlight package of the WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires State Cross Country Championships will be available on the new WIAA online portal.

XC Boys and Girls both Regional Champions! On to State!

FR Lindy Jacobson led the Lakeside girls to the team championship with her time of 19:38 to beat all 56 runners while SR Michael Anderson nearly won the boys event, coming in just :01 sec behind the Colville winner in 16:50, as both Lakeside teams dominated the Bi-District Regional meet Saturday, Oct 29th at Plantes Ferry Park in the Spokane Valley.

Lakeside girls blasted the 8 team field from District 7 and District 6 with 26 points as they placed 1, 4, 6, 7, 8, 11 and 20. Jacobson was followed closely by SR Vanessa Ahrendt (4th 20:30), SO Megan Ahrendt (6th 20:55), JR Sofie Marikis (7th 20:58), JR Mary Daniel (8th 21:07), FR Stefanie Marikis (11th 21:17) and SO Mikayla Presta (20th 21:58). All 7 Eagles runners were called to the podium as the top twenty individuals were recognized as qualifying for state meet participation.

The top four girls teams, Lakeside (26 points), Riverside (65), Cashmere (66) and Chelan (126), move on to the state meet this Saturday, Nov 5th at Pasco. Colville, Chewelah, Freeman and Omak did not qualify.

The Lakeside girls remain ranked #1 in state in the Week #8 Coaches Poll.

The Lakeside boys, 2010 defending State Champions, placed five in the top twenty out of 75 runners and 11 teams, as Anderson was followed by SO Ryan Coffman (3rd 16:59), SR Jake Widman (5th 17:14), SO newcomer JT Lauderdale (9th 17:36), SO Donovan Dewey (17th 18:05), JR Cody Constant (22nd 18:09.4) and SR Jimmy Spencer (33rd 18:44).

The boys also dominated team scoring with a 36, beating the other qualifying teams of Colville (52), Cashmere (91) and Omak (113). The boys also remain ranked #1 in state in the Coaches Poll.

The excitement is building for a tremendous state meet this Saturday as both Lakeside Cross Country teams travel to the Tri-Cities to see who are the best teams in the state!

Volleyball grabs #3 seed to Regionals

Facing a loser out match in the District 7 volleyball tournament at regular season champion Colville site last Saturday, Oct 29th, Lakeside (6-4, 10-6) won in three straight sets 25-18, 25-19 and 26-24 over Newport (4-6, 6-11) to claim the 3rd seed to Regionals.

The Eagles join #1 and undefeated Colville (10-0, 16-0) and #2 Freeman (8-2, 13-3) this Saturday, Nov 5th, at the Regional tournament in Chelan, where they will face Caribou Trail League #2 in a loser out first round match at 2:00pm in the Chelan Community Gym.

Soccer beats Freeman to face Newport for District 7 title

The Lakeside (5-3 league, 8-7 overall) girls soccer squad defeated Freeman (4-4, 6-5) 3-1 Thursday, Oct 27th in District 7 first round action to set up another showdown with League Champions Newport (7-1, 15-2) this Wednesday, Nov 2nd, this time for the District 7 Championship Title. The Grizzlies defeated Colville 2-0 in the other district match.

Game time is 7:30pm at Newport.

Girls soccer faces big showdown with Newport Thursday

The Lakeside girls soccer squad has a chance to grab a share of the regular season league title with a win against Newport this Thursday, Oct 20th at home. The Eagles come into the final league match for both schools with a 5-2 league record, 7-5 overall, while Newport stands at 6-1 league, 13-2 overall. Match time 4:00pm.

Newport's only league loss, a 2-1 squeaker, came at the feet of Colville Oct 6th in Colville, while Lakeside fell to Newport 2-0 Oct 04 and Freeman 2-1 Sep 20 in away matches. The Eagles rebounded against Freeman with a 4-2 home win Oct 6th.

XC Boys and Girls both ranked No. 1 in state!

The Washington State Cross Country Coaches Poll #7 for Week of October 17 now has both Lakeside teams -- Boys and Girls -- ranked number 1 in state in Class 1A!

While the Boys have won a state title five times, including last year's 2010 win, the girls have never reached higher than 4th in state, which they have attained the last three years.

Senior Day is this Tuesday, October 18 at Sontag Park versus Newport. Race time 4:00 pm. Come out and cheer on your #1 Lakeside cross country teams and its senior leaders!

XC Girls storm Sunfair, take 3rd in 2A and Under Division

Three Lakeside cross country girls were awarded ribbons by placing in the top 15 of their respective flights to lead their team to a ground-breaking 3rd place trophy in the 2A and Under Division at the prestigious Sunfair Invitational in Yakima, WA last Saturday, Oct 1st, a race over a 3 mile course that features a torturous, steep and terraced hill climb at the end of the first mile and includes many of the very best teams and individual runners in the entire Pacific Northwest.

Only 2A state #2 ranked Cheney (60 pts) and 2A #5 Bellingham (110 pts) topped the Eagles, who edged out fellow NEA member and last year's 1A State Champion Riverside -- which took 4th with 141 points -- for the third time this season with 116 team points. Caribou Trail League's Cashmere was a close 5th with 144 points in the 16 team 2A and Under Division.

The Eagles were 13th overall out of 44 teams, beating thirteen of nineteen 4A schools, including Wenatchee, Walla Walla, Post Falls and GSL's Ferris, and besting five of nine 3A schools, including Kamiakin, Southridge and GSL's North Central.

FR Lindy Jacobson ran her 3 mile flight in 19:54.3, good for a team high 9th place and 9 points in Flight 5. The time was the fastest of all seven varsity Eagle runners, who each ran separately in flights in which the seventh runner from each entered team ran against all seventh runners from every other team in Flight 1, the sixth runners all ran in Flight 2, and so on until the final race, in which the first runner from each team ran against all other first runners from every other team in Flight 7.

Points were awarded to each based on the place of finish in their respective flight, minus non-aligned runners (individual HS runners not running with a school team). The lower the individual number the better, and the seven runners' points are combined to arrive at the team score.

JR Mary Daniel, running in Flight 1, finished 11th out of 51, an Eagle team 2nd best, for 10 points with a time of 21:34.5. SO Megan Ahrendt, running as a second runner in Flight 6, finished 12th out of 37 for 12 points and a team third fastest time of 19:56.4. Her sister, SR Vanessa Ahrendt, was a mere .4 seconds faster and just 1.7 seconds off Jacobson's time with a 19:56 (33rd out of 42, 30 points) in the humbling Flight 7, a race of the very best runners, including Glacier Peak's top state high school runner Amy-Eloise Neale, DyeStat's national #4 runner, who broke the 2004 course record of 17:10 with a world-class 3 mile of 17:03.9.

FR Stefanie Marikis missed a ribbon by only one place, coming in 16th out of 50 for 15 points in Flight 2 with a time of 21:32.2. Her sister, JR Sofie Marikis, completed Flight 4 in 20:46.7, coming in 20th for 19 team points. SO Mikayla Presta, running Flight 3, was 22nd for 21 points (21:53.5).

SR Michelle Sobinsky, attending as an alternate, ran the open citizen's race with head XC coach Steve Olson.

By Olson's reckoning, this latest achievement among many this young season should propel the Lakeside girls -- who currently reside at #3 behind Riverside and King's -- to a #1 state 1A ranking by next week's XC Coaches' Poll #6.

XC Boys rout as Girls top state champ Riverside

Lakeside cross country boys routed Riverside and Chewelah in the Eagles' first league meet of 2011 Tuesday, Sept 27th at Sontag Park, beating the Rams handily 16-47 and blanking Chewelah 15-50. 15 points are the fewest possible in a cross country race, resulting from all five scoring runners finishing before any of their competitor's runners.

Meanwhile the girls topped last year's 1A state champion Riverside 22-37 and blanked Chewelah 15-48.

The Lakeside boys finished 1, 2, 3, 4 overall -- Ryan Coffman 16:49, Michael Anderson 17:01, Jake Widman 17:10 and Cody Constant 17:27. Donovan Dewey finished 6th overall to complete the sweep over Chewelah.

Lakeside girls finished 2, 3, 4, 5 overall behind Riverside's phenom Jess Mildes (19:14) -- Vanessa Ahrendt 19:57, Megan Ahrendt 19:58, Lindy Jacobson 19:59 and Sofie Marikis 20:34.

The Lakeside teams head to Yakima Friday for the highly competitive Sunfair Invite this Saturday, Oct 1st., where they will be tested against the very best runners in all classifications throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Cross Country Girls blaze new trails

The girls' cross country teams and individuals reached new heights of success over the last two weekends, culminating with a varsity unofficial first place team finish over all contenders -- including GSL 4A-3A members Ferris and North Central and ID-5A Lake City -- and one 1st place, two 2nd places and 6 other top ten individual overall finishes at the Erik Anderson/Runners Soul Invitational at Plantes Ferry Park in the Spokane Valley Saturday, September 24th.

Officially, Lakeside was awarded the first place trophy in the 2A-1A division of the 3 division race (4A-3A, 2A-1A, 2B-1B).

The Eagles, paced by sisters SR Vanessa and SO (2010 7th state) Megan Ahrendt, who finished 3rd and 5th overall with personal records of 19:26 and 19:34 respectively, also edged out last year's 1A State Champion Riverside, led by Rams sisters Jess (1st overall 18:17) and Rebecca Mildes (4th overall 19:30), thanks to strong placing by Lakeside's 3-7 runners FR Lindy Jacobson (9th 20:00), state participants SO Mikayla Presta (14th 20:25) and JR Sofie Marikis (23rd 20:50), newcomer SR Michelle Sobinski (24th 21:02) and FR Stefanie Marikis (35th 21:41).

127 runners started the varsity race while only 112 finished the hot, shade-less course where the temperature reached 90 degrees by race time.

The JV girls also dominated their awards, with Lakeside's JR Mary Daniel overtaking ID-5A Lake City's Leanne Asper -- who ran most of the race widening the gap -- at the 400m mark to take the lead. Only with a powerful full sprint down the 100m stretch was the LC runner able to claim the win by just 2.5 seconds. Daniel finished 2nd overall with an over :30 sec PR time of 21:01.

Daniel was joined at the podium for medals presentations by teammates SR Nicole Gomolski (6th 22:16), state participant SR Morganne McCann (8th 22:17) and JR Kaylee Belknap (9th 22:18). Newcomer SO Farrahn O'Hara (67th 27:56) finished the team scoring for the Eagles, who took 3rd overall in the JV single division meet.

Two Lakeside freshmen started the day's Eagle domination with first and second place finishes in the earlier full-length 5,000 meter 9th Grade Single Division race. Chelsey Tremblay took top step with her 21:48 finish, followed by Anika Halterman in 22:12.

The previous weekend saw the JV girls take second overall behind regional powerhouse Coeur d'Alene at the punishing Farragut Invitational, while the varsity came up only one point shy of Riverside, winners of 2nd place in the small school B Division at 55 points behind ID-3A Timberlake with 50 points. Only 2A Cheney and ID-5A Coeur d'Alene performed better than the three "B" schools, taking 1st and 2nd in the "A" Division with 35 and 36 points, respectively.

Michelle Sobinsky and Nicole Gomolski led the Eagles JV with a 3rd and 4th place finish, while Morganne McCann placed in the top 10 with her 9th place finish. Anika Halterman was 11th and Kaylee Belknap finished the team scoring at 17th place.

Vanessa Ahrendt took 3rd in varsity small school with a 21:04 while Megan Ahrendt grabbed the 10th spot with a 21:48.

All four Lakeside cross country teams - JV Boys, JV Girls, Varsity Men and Varsity Ladies -- placed in the top 5 at the Silverwood Coaster Cross Invitational Saturday, Sept 10, to start the 2011 season strong.

Eagles' JV Girls, led by FR Stefanie Marikis (6th 21:56.5) and SR Michelle Sobinsky (7th 22:03.5), placed 3rd out of 18 Pacific Northwest teams with 125 points behind Idaho 5A schools Capital (60 pts) and Rocky Mountain (71 pts) of Boise. SR Nicole Gomolski was 10th (22:09.1), followed by FR Anika Halterman (13th 22:23.7) and SO Kylie Crooks (112th 27:18.8).

Lakeside Varsity Men, in what was to be a re-building year, took 4th out of 27 teams with 192 points behind Idaho 5A schools Timberline (53 pts), Rocky Mountain (59 pts) and Meridian (126 pts), and topped ID-5As Borah (205) and Capital (227). The Eagles were led by SO Ryan Coffman (16th 16:39.4) and SR Michael Anderson (18th 16:40.1), followed by SR Jake Widman (37th 17:18.3), JR Cody Constant (46th 17:30.7), SO Donovan Dewey (76th 18:08), SR Jimmy Spencer (87th 18:18.1) and JR Nick Thomas (140th 19:48.5).

The Varsity Ladies placed 5th (128 points) behind local WA-2A powerhouse Cheney (81 points), ID-3A Timberlake (84 points) of Spirit Lake, ID, and ID-5A schools Rocky Mountain (87 points) and Timberline (92 points). The varsity ladies were paced by sisters SO Megan Ahrendt (15th 20:03) and SR Vanessa Ahrendt (18th 20:09), followed by FR Lindy Jacobson (24th 20:32), JR Sofie Marikis (31st 21:01), SO Mikayla Presta (44th 21:26), JR Mary Daniel (46th 21:33) and SR Morganne McCann (61st 21:58).

The JV Boys also placed 5th (143 points) behind Rocky Mountain (15 pts), Cheney (103), Hazen (110) and Capital (127). The boys were paced by newcomer SO Eli Williams (13th 18:06), SO JT Lauderdale (15th 18:11.7) and JR Mike Schimke (19th 18:19.7), followed by SO Ricky Carroll (48th 19:35.6) and JR Michael Rojeski (63rd 19:57).

Girls' soccer and volleyball starts tonight

The Lakeside Lady Eagles begin their 2011 soccer season tonight at Mt Spokane, game time 4pm.

This begins a series against Greater Spokane League teams that includes a visit to North Central Thursday, Sept 8 (4pm), a hosting of Lewis and Clark on Monday, Sept 12 (4pm), and a match under the lights at Central Valley on Thursday, Sept 15 (7:30pm).

After opening league play at Freeman Sept 20 (4pm), the Eagles return to the GSL to face Shadle Park Sept 22 (4pm), and then finish up the regular season with games at Riverside (Sept 27), versus Colville (Sept 29), at Newport (Oct 4), versus Freeman (Oct 6), versus Riverside (Oct 13), at Colville (Oct 18) and versus Newport (Oct 20). All league games are at 4pm.

Spokesman picks Lakeside 5th in NEA football preseason preview

The consensus preseason pick to win the Northeast A League? None of the above. “I don’t see a clear-cut favorite,” Chewelah coach Jim Fisk said. Lakeside’s Brian Dunn agreed. “Any team can finish first to sixth in the league,” he wrote. “The league is much improved. Every Friday will be entertaining. Since I don’t see any easy games on our schedule, it must be us.”

Fisk likes the look of his neighbors: Riverside and Colville. “Riverside is going to be tough,” the Chewelah coach said. “Colville lost a lot of players from last year, but they should be good. But look at the rest of the league: Freeman is always tough, Newport is much improved and will be good again and Lakeside is always good.

“I hate to say it, but injuries will probably have as much to say about who wins as anything else.”

Lakeside’s and Colville’s head softball coaches crossed paths between fields at Merkel Sports Complex shortly after their teams absorbed agonizing losses in the State 1A tournament semifinals Saturday.

“Tough one, Coach?” said Colville’s Mandy Sumner, commiserating with Lakeside’s Chuck Moffatt.

Lakeside failed to protect a two-run lead and fell 8-7 to Onalaska. Minutes later on an adjacent field, Colville lost to Connell 7-6 in nine innings. The Northeast A rivals rebounded to win their next games to set up their sixth clash this season. Lakeside (25-3) took the final meeting 6-5, earning the third-place trophy and winning the season series 4-2. Colville (24-7) settled for fourth.

“Coming in we were one game ahead of them and it felt good to settle it that we could come out on top,” Eagles junior pitcher Vanessa Ahrendt said. “It was a good way to finish the season.”

Lakeside fastpitch regional champs! D6/7 #1 seed to state

Last Saturday in a soggy Dryden, WA, the District 7 #1 seed Lakeside fastpitch team arrived fired up and ready to play, downing tenacious District 6 #2 Chelan -- winners over D7 #3 Riverside in the loser-out first round -- by a score of 7-3, and then dominating D7 #2 Colville -- winners over D6 #3 Okanogan and D6 #1 Cascade -- by a score of 9-2 to win the Bi-District Regional Championship and earn the D6/D7 #1 seed to the state championship in Spokane this coming Friday-Saturday.

Lakeside junior Vanessa Ahrendt gave up back-to-back home runs to Chelan in the third inning for its only scoring, but those were answered with home runs by junior Savannah Rolston and sophomore Nikki Tiffany, who led the Eagles' hitting with three each. Senior centerfielder Emily Lesser added two hits as Lakeside generated 12 hits to Chelan's 8. Ahrendt shut out the Goats the other 6 innings while hurling 14 strikeouts.

Citing NFHS softball rule 6.2.2, Colville head coach Mandy Sumners, for the fourth time in as many meetings, insisted Ahrendt remove the tape splint from her injured index finger. Ahrendt responded by throwing 8 strikeouts and shutting out the Indians the final 6 innings after her teammates lit up the two Colville pitchers in the first inning 8 runs to 2.

The Eagles added a run in the second to go up 9-2, and threatened to run-rule the Indians in the sixth as Tiffany launched the ball deep to the fence with two on and two out, but was short by just a few feet against a stiff head wind, giving the Colville centerfielder opportunity to make the catch and retire the side.

Colville secured the #2 seed with its two wins, while Chelan grabbed the #3 seed from Cascade with its one run win in the final game.

Lakeside fastpitch claims District 7 title!

Following all-conference and player of the year award presentations, the Lakeside softball team throttled league champ Colville's hitting juggernaut, led by League Offensive Player of the Year senior Amanda Hamilton, to only 5 hits and lit up the Indians' just-crowned League Pitcher of the Year junior Jolene Rogers for 10 hits to win the District 7 1A tournament championship game by a score of 6-2 last Saturday, May 14th, at Central Valley High School.

The win avenges doubleheader losses at Colville May 7th that leapfrogged the Indians (14-1, 18-4) over the previously unbeaten Eagles (13-2, 20-2) and into the league title. Lakeside was the only NEA team to beat the Indians this year, winning 5-4 at home April 19th.

The Eagles edged Riverside 6-5 and the Indians run-ruled Chewelah 10-0 in the earlier games to set up the show down.

Lakeside's Vanessa Ahrendt, back from a two week hand injury, shut out the Indians five innings before giving up a 2 run homer to senior Erin Torgerson. Aside from that uh-oh, Colville could only manage four singles off the three-time 1st Team All-Conference junior.

The Eagles, led by three-time All-Conference junior catcher Savannah Rolston's 3 hits, blasted Rogers with triples by Ahrendt and sophomore All-Conference first baseman Nikki Tiffany and three doubles, one each by sophomore 1st Team All-Conference left fielder Lauren Gerty, senior center fielder Emily Lesser and Rolston. Senior short stop and Defensive Player of the Year Michaela Brittos also added a single to those by Gerty, Rolston (2) and Ahrendt.

In a reversal of their previous meeting, the Indians cracked under the Lakeside offensive pressure, committing four uncharacteristic throwing errors, while the Eagles remained poised and in control, committing only one catching error in the day's swirling winds.

The district title is the Eagles' ticket to a first round bye in the Bi-District Tournament at Cascade High School in Leavenworth Saturday, May 21st.

The Bi-District bracket pits the top three District 6 Caribou Trail League teams against the top three District 7 Northeast A League teams for three seeds to the state fastpitch tournament to be held this year at Dwight Merkel Complex in Spokane May 27-28.

Eagles' FP pitching, hitting and fielding too much for Cougars

The Lakeside Eagles fastpitch squad traveled to Chewelah last night, April 27th, and buried the Jenkins HS Cougars 16-0 in a mercy-ruled 5 innings with dominating pitching, hitting and fielding to take their league record to 9-0 and their overall win-loss to 12-0.

Lakeside junior lefty hurler Vanessa Ahrendt threw a perfect game, the second of her HS career, made possible by stabbing grabs of hard shot line drives by middle infield sisters senior ss Michaela and sophomore 2B Miranda Brittos in the last frame to help keep the no-hitter, the bases clean of Cougar runners, preserve the 'triple no' and help take Ahrendt's season win-loss record to 10-0.

Eagles fielders were also perfect, with no errors on the night. Jenkins committed 1.

Eagles hitters doubled their game scoring output in the top of the 5th, driving in 8 runs to assure invoking the run-rule with 16 total after knocking in 3 in the 2nd, 2 in the 3rd and 3 in the 4th. Lakeside had 18 hits, paced by Miranda Brittos' 4 singles and junior catcher Savannah Rolston's 3 hits, including a double.

Leadoff hitter sophomore Lauren Gerty, Michaela Brittos and senior rightfielder Kayla Bennett each had 2 hits, while sophomore 1B Nikki Tiffany, Ahrendt, senior centerfielder Emily Lesser and senior DP Mary Haffner each contributed a hit. Ahrendt and Lesser made theirs a double.

The game, originally scheduled for Tuesday, April 26th, was delayed one day due to a snow storm that blanketed the hills of northeastern Washington Monday and Tuesday.

The Eagles traveled to Chattaroy last Friday for a doubleheader against the Riverside Rams, coming away with a two-hit mercy-ruled 11-0 shut out in the first game, and a 5-inning mercy-ruled 21-4 drubbing of the Rams in the second.

Ahrendt pitched the early game, while Nikki Tiffany got the win in going the distance in the second game to take her season record to 2-0.

The Eagles are scheduled to face the Intermountain League (3A-ID) members Timberlake Tigers tonight, April 28th, in Spirit Lake, Idaho. Game time 4:00 p.m.

Fastpitch grabs 1st place from Colville

In an extra-innings battle of NEA fastpitch leaders at home last Tuesday, April 19th, Lakeside came out on top of Colville by a score of 5-4 with a walk-off RBI by Eagles' lead-off hitter sophomore Lauren Gerty in the bottom of the ninth to help the Eagles take sole possession of 1st place in the Northeast A League with a 6-0 record. Colville dropped to 5-1 in league to remain in second place.

At game time, Colville -- last year's 2A state runner up as a member of the Great Northern League -- and Lakeside were tied in league record at 5-0. By the end of the top of the fourth inning, the hard-hitting Indians were up 4-1 and threatening to run away from last year's District 7 1A champs and state 3rd place trophy winners.

But the Eagles responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of frame 4 to tie it up at 4 runs apiece.

Both pitchers, state veteran Lakeside junior Vanessa Ahrendt, a two-time 1st team all-conference member, and Colville junior Jolene Rogers, a prodigy of Mark Rice, father of former University of Oregon and two-time Team Pitcher of the Year (2006, 2007) Melissa Rice (Colville, 2005), bore down and got shut out innings through regulation to take the game into extra innings.

Inning 8 also remained scoreless, and with a tie-breaker runner starting on 2nd for Colville in the top of the ninth, Ahrendt snatched a hard line drive out of the air to her left, spun and flipped to 2nd for a double play that ended the Indians' base runner scoring threat. A fly to centerfield, tracked down and caught by senior Emily Lessor for the 3rd out, retired the side.

That's when Gerty stepped to the plate and belted a hard, long shot deep to left field, driving in the Eagles' tie-breaker runner from 2nd for the walk-off win and advancement to sole possession of 1st place.

Gerty also had the only extra bases hit for the Eagles with a triple, as Lakeside came up short with only 7 hits to Colville's 10. Sophomore 2nd baseman Kirstie Kyllo joined Gerty with 2 hits, while senior shortstop Michaela Brittos, sophomore 1st baseman Nikki Tiffany and Ahrendt had 1 hit apiece.

The Eagles and the Indians meet again in a season finale doubleheader at Colville, Saturday, May 7th, that could very well determine the 2011 league champion and top seed to the District 7 tournament.

Fastpitch success in Seattle

The Lakeside fastpitch squad took the 1:00 p.m. ferry to Bainbridge Island Friday, April 15th, and sailed back with a 7-5 win over the Seattle Times state 3rd ranked 2009 state champs and 2010 state runners up Metro Conference 3A Bainbridge Spartans (7-2).

The next morning the Eagles took charge of the University of Washington's Husky Softball Stadium as the home team and pounded the KingCo 4A Redmond Mustangs (6-2) 8 runs to 2 in the first inning of the 9:30 a.m. game, cruising to an 8-4 win in the annual Washington State High School Softball Festival to remain undefeated and take their overall record to 8-0. The game ended after 4-1/2 innings due to a 90 minute time limit imposed by the festival's five-game schedule.

Prior to Friday's loss, Bainbridge had outscored opponents 104 runs to 11 over 8 games, including shutouts of Cleveland, Eastside Catholic, West Seattle, Seattle Prep and Lakeside School (Seattle). Redmond had outscored opponents 80 runs to 28 over 7 games prior to meeting the Eagles Saturday.

Offensive highlights included Lakeside sophomore first baseman Nikki Tiffany's home run over the 200' portable outfield fence in the Friday game and senior third baseman Kayla Sevier's bomb hit high over the purple monster outfield wall just left of the centerfield scoreboard at Husky Field.

The Eagles had 15 hits to Redmond's 4 with no errors Saturday, with 3 hits apiece by sophomore right fielder Lauren Gerty, junior catcher Savannah Rolston and junior pitcher Vanessa Ahrendt.

Ahrendt went the distance in both games and upped her season record to 7-0.

Lakeside is knotted at the top of the Northeast A League with last year's 2A state runner ups Colville Indians -- who dropped down to 1A in the most recent WIAA reclassifications -- with 5-0 league records.

The Indians have outscored opponents 107-9 over 9 games while recording shut outs over NEA members Newport, Freeman, Riverside and Chewelah.

The Eagles and the Indians face a crucial contest to decide the league lead Tuesday, April 19th at Lakeside. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.

Freshmen women lead T&F to dominant win at Undeberg Invite

A pair of Lakeside freshmen women led the Eagles to a varsity women's dominating track & field victory at the small school Undeberg Invitational Saturday, April 16th, at Medical Lake High School.

The Eagles scored 105 points with closest competitor Columbia-Hunters at 63.5 points. NEA member Chewelah was tied for 12th with Reardan out of 21 2A-1B teams with 25 points.

Lakeside freshman Megan Ahrendt won the 800 meter race with a time of 2:35.58 and the 1600m in 5:48.93 while Lakeside freshman Katie Collins won the 100m high hurdles in 18.13 seconds and was second in the 300m hurdles with a time of 52.31. The Lakeside women's 4x400 relay team also took 1st with a time of 4:40.73, beating 2nd place Cusick by almost 13 seconds.

The Lakeside men took second with 84 points, behind team leader Waitsburg-Prescott with 98.5 points. The men were led by senior Colton Berry who won the 800m in 2:07.29. The mens 4x400 relay team of Berry, Jake Widman, Cody Loveland and Joe Blazek also won with a time of 3:44.75.

Other Lakeside women standout performances included senior Jessica Coffman's second place finishes in the shot put (35') and discus (112'03) and sophomore Davina Carr's runner up finish in the pole vault (8'06).

Lakeside freshman Ryan Coffman was second in the 3200 meters (10:29.99) and third in the 1600m (4:44.25), while senior Blazek was second in the 110m high hurdles (16.8) and third in the 300m hurdles (44.08).

Lakeside in High School Fastpitch Festival Saturday at UW

A diverse lineup is set for the five-game High School Fastpitch Festival this Friday and Saturday at the University of Washington.

And there's a bonus game Friday at 4 p.m. between Holy Names and Walla Walla, both ranked in the top-10. Walla Walla is No. 2 in 4A, while Holy Names sits at No. 9 in 3A.

The official Festival starts at 6 p.m. Friday with Aberdeen taking on Connell.

Five games are set for Saturday:

Redmond vs. Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls), 9 a.m.
Liberty vs. Selah, 11 a.m.
South Kitsap vs. Walla Walla, 4 p.m.
Centralia vs. Ellensburg, 6 p.m.
Wilson vs. Montesano, 8 p.m.

Admission is $5 for adults or students without an ASB card and $4 for all others (including children under 12 and seniors over 60).

Lakeside T&F leads small schools at West Valley Invite

The Lakeside varsity mens track and field team took 4th with 75.5 points and the varsity women took 5th with 62 points overall out of 12 and 13 teams respectively at the West Valley Invite on March 19th, 2011.

Teams included GSL powers Mt Spokane (team 1st in both mens -- 174.5 points -- and womens -- 99 points) and University (2nd mens -- 135, 3rd womens --77). 2A power Cheney took 3rd in mens (80 points) and 2A East Valley took 2nd in womens (89 points) and 3A Shadle Park (69 points) took 4th in womens.

Several Eagles won individual 1st place medals to lead their teams, including senior Jessica Coffman in the discus (99'3"), junior Anandae Clark-Egland in the pole vault (11'06") and senior Paul Thomas in both the discus (159"5") and the high jump (6'0").

Fellow NEA schools Riverside (8th - 22 pt mens, 7th - 27 pts womens), Colville (9th - 15 pts mens, 6th - 59 pts womens) and Newport (11th - 11 pts mens, 7th - 55 pts womens) also competed.

Other highlights included junior Jimmie Day's 2nd place finish in the mens 200m and 4th place finish in the 100m. Joe Blazek, Jimmie Day, Demetrious Watson and Elden Clarkson also grabbed 2nd in the mens 4x100 relay (45.39), Coffman took 2nd in the womens' 4kg shot put and sophomore Jenna Widman took 2nd in the womens' triple jump with a 32'5" mark. Junior Trevor Wood took 3rd in the mens long jump (19'5") and 5th in the triple jump (38'11").

Freshman Katie Collins was 4th in the womens 300m hurdles with a time of 54.01 sec, senior Cody Little was 4th in the mens javelin (146'8") and Thomas took 4th in the mens shot put (47'11.5"). Colton Berry, Kyle Powell, Evan Dobbs and Ryan Coffman combined to take 4th in the mens 4x400 relay and junior Jake Widman took 4th in the mens 400 meters (53.72 sec).

Fastpitch dominates in season non-league opener over 3A North Central

The Lakeside Eagles fastpitch softball team got off to a dominating start to the 2011 season with a 5 inning run-ruled shutout of 3A North Central last Friday, March 18th. The Eagles defeated the Indians, of the Greater Spokane League, by a score of 10-0.

Lakeside junior and two-time all conference catcher Savannah Rolston hit the only home run of the game, a solo shot over the left field barrier.

The game was originally scheduled to be played at Lakeside, but was moved due to the condition of the Eagles' home field. Lakeside remained the home team for the contest even though it was played at North Central's field.

It was a duel of two lefties as Lakeside junior and two-time all conference 1st team pitcher Vanessa Ahrendt battled NC senior veteran starter Echo Barline. Ahrendt gave up only 2 hits while hurling a wicked mix of inside and backdoor curves and in and out rise and drop balls, while Barline struggled to hold off the Eagle bats, giving up a total of 10 hits. The Eagles forced 3 Indian errors while committing just 1.

North Central has gone to the 3A state tournament five of the last six years (2005-2009) and finished in 3rd place overall in the GSL behind 4A Mead and 4A University with a 12-8 league record and was the No. 1 seed to regionals after defeating Mt. Spokane 12-5 in the District 8 3A tournament last year. Lakeside was the District 7 1A Champion, Region 6/7 No. 2 seed to state and was awarded a 3rd place trophy in the rain-shortened 1A state championship tournament in 2010.

Six Lady Eagles recorded hits, including sophomore veteran lead-off hitter Lauren Gerty, senior veteran third baseman Kayla Sevier with two doubles, Rolston with a single and her home run, sophomore veteran first baseman Nikki Tiffany with two singles, Ahrendt with a double and a triple and sophomore veteran second baseman Miranda Brittos.

The game ended dramatically in the bottom of the fifth as Ahrendt beat out the throw to third on her triple to the fence in deep left center with an inside reach back slide by, and then stole home on a wild pitch for a walk off tenth run to mercy rule the Indians and jump start the new season.

The Lady Eagles will once again challenge the Greater Spokane League this Friday, March 25th as they visit 4A Rogers in non-league action. Game time 3:30 p.m. at the Pirates' home field.

YAKIMA – Joel Yellow Owl poured in a game-high 29 points, Mitchell Zapien added 22 points and the Zillah Leopards (19-6) scored 77 points over the final three quarters to eliminate Lakeside (16-10) from the State 1A tournament with a 93-63 win Saturday at Eisenhower High.

Ryan Gundrson paced the Eagles with 21 points and Kyle Powell added 11, but Lakeside could not hold an early 20-16 lead.

Zillah went on a 29-12 run in the second quarter to take a 13-point lead into the break and never looked back, advancing to the Hardwood Classic March 3-5 at the Yakima SunDome.

Girls

Granger 43, Lakeside 41: The Spartans (18-4) rallied from a one-point halftime deficit to eliminate the Eagles (17-11) at Eisenhower High.

Taylor Fleming led the Eagles with 14 points and Lexie Zappone added 12.

After taking the lead into the half, the Eagles scored just 16 points in the second half.

The Lady Eagles hosted Deer Park in early non-league basketball action last night and defeated the Lady Stags of the 2A Great Northern League 40-38 to take their 2010-11 record to 2-1.

Lakeside girls beat Medical Lake last Friday night (Dec 3) 51-42, but were bested by Reardan 62-48 on Saturday (Dec 4).

Lakeside led at the half 23-15, but Deer Park rallied late, scoring 14 points in the 4th period to come within 2 at the final buzzer.

Flemming and Campbell led the Eagles scoring with 11 points each.

The Lakeside boys found themselves down 41-33 at the half to Great Northern League's 2A Deer Park Stags at home last night, but staged a flip-flop 43-36 comeback in the second half that fell one point short, losing 77-76 in early non-league basketball action.

The loss drops the Eagles to 2-1 after wins over Medical Lake (58-52, Dec 3) and Reardan (70-64, Dec 4).

The Eagles couldn't stop DP's Peone, who led the Stags with 36 points.

The Lakeside girls soccer squad defeated Kiona-Benton 5-1 last Tuesday, Nov 9th in first round state action at Lakeside High School to move on to the quarterfinals round Saturday, Nov 13th at Marquette Stadium, Yakima, where they knocked off the La Salle Lightning 1-0 to advance to the semifinals this Friday, Nov 19th at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup.

The Eagles and the Lightning were scoreless after regulation, and neither team could score a goal after two overtime periods. The match was finally decided on a shootout in which Lakeside scored three goals (Bristos, Baran, Peters) to La Salle's 1, giving the Eagles the 1-0 match score win.

La Salle, district champions from the SCAC West 1A conference of Yakima Valley District Five, had a 16-1-2 record coming into the quarterfinals matchup against District 7 champs Lakeside Eagles (15-4-1), and defeated NEA member Newport 1-0 in round one to get there.

Lakeside now faces Emerald City conference's Bush, a private school from Sea-King District Two, in a matchup that determines the upper bracket state championship match contestant. Bush defeated Caribou Trail League's Cashmere 5-2 in quarterfinal action to get to the semifinals.

The state championship match will be played Saturday, Nov 20th at 2pm at Sparks Stadium, with the losers of the semifinal matches meeting at 10am for 3rd/4th place.

LAKESIDE XC BOYS WIN STATE! Girls bring home 4th place trophy!

The Lakeside boys and girls cross country teams had a very successful state race today in Pasco as the boys took the STATE CHAMPIONSHIP and the girls took 4th place for the third year in a row!

Sr Colton Berry was awarded a 10th place individual medal in leading his talented Eagles squad to its third state championship in five years with a time of 16:29.5. Berry was on the state championship team of 2008 and led the 4th place team of last year. This is the fifth state championship for Lakeside boys, having titled in 1997 (2A), 1998 (2A), 2006, 2008 and now 2010.

District 7 dominated the boys results as Lakeside and NEA League newcomer Colville finished 1 and 2 with 83 points and 97 points respectively. The next closest finishers were the private schools Charles Wright Academy with 130 points and King's with 133 points.

Lakeside girls have made a habit of mounting the podium and bringing home state hardware as this is the 3rd year in a row they've placed 4th. 2008 was the first time in school history that the girls had trophied at state. Only the first 4 team finishers are awarded a trophy.

The Lady Eagles were led by freshman Megan Ahrendt, who medaled as the 7th fastest individual runner with a time of 20:01. Medals are awarded to the first 16 runners in each race.

District 7 also dominated the girls side as NEA League newcomer Riverside won the state championship with 80 points. King's took second with 100 points and District 6's Omak took third with 107. The Lady Eagles earned 133 points for its 4th place finish.

The league #1 Lady Eagles (7-0-1, 12-4-1) defeated #2 Newport (6-1-1, 14-3-1) by a score of 2-1 to win the District 7 Soccer Championship and advance to the District 6/7 Regional Crossover as NEA #1 seed!

The championship win means Lakeside will host Caribou Trail League #3 Okanogan (12-6) this Saturday, Nov 6th at Lakeside Middle School in a loser out/winner to state sudden death crossover match. Winner will move on to state as the District 6/7 #2 seed. Match time is 2pm.

The state championships will be held at Carl Sparks Stadium in Puyallup. First round action will be Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov 9-10 with quarterfinals on Saturday, Nov 13th. Semifinals occur Friday, Nov 19th, with championship round on Saturday, Nov 20th.

Volleyball takes regional 3rd seed from Freeman!

Despite stumbling late in the regular season to end up tied with Newport for 3rd in NEA league at 5-5, the Lady Eagles volleyball squad regrouped and defeated #2 Freeman in a 5th game tie-breaker Saturday afternoon in the consolation bracket of the District 7 tournament to grab the 3rd and final seed to regionals.

Freeman beat Lakeside in both regular season matches to end up 8-2 in league (13-4 overall) behind #1 and league-undefeated Colville (10-0, 19-1).

Lakeside now faces Caribou Trail League #2 (Cascade-Leavenworth or Omak) in a loser out first round Saturday, Nov 6th at the Regional Tournament venued at Freeman High School.

Lakeside Eagles football traveled to Freeman for the final regular season game Friday, Oct 29th and came away with a 12-8 win over the Scotties. The win gives the Eagles a final 4-1 league record (5-4 overall) and secures 2nd place for Lakeside for the 2010 regular season behind undefeated Colville.

The 2nd place finish means Lakeside will host Caribou Trail League #2 Omak (6-3) Friday, November 5th, in the one-and-done Regional Crossover with District 6. NEA #1 Colville (9-0) will also host CTL #3 Cashmere (7-2) Friday, while NEA #3 Riverside (6-3) travels to CTL #1 Chelan (8-1).

Lady Eagles futbol faces Newport for District 7 Championship

Lakeside girls soccer defeated Colville 6-1 last night in 1st round District 7 action while Newport downed Freeman 3-1 Wednesday to set up the championship bracket for the District 7 title match Thursday, Nov 4th at Gonzaga Prep soccer field.

Three teams move on to the District 6/7 regional cross-over. Lakeside and Newport battle to determine the #1 and #2 seed at 7:30pm, while Freeman and Colville play at 5:30pm to grab the third and final seed.

NEA #1 will host Caribou Trail League #3, while NEA #2 and NEA #3 will travel to CTL #2 and CTL #1 respectively on Saturday, Nov 6th. The winner of each match in the one-and-done regional cross-over format will move on to state.

Boys and Girls XC going to state! Girls' #7 runner wins tie-breaker for Lakeside!

Sophomore cross country newcomer Mary Daniel, #7 varsity runner for Lakeside girls, placed 36th overall in the District 6/7 Regionals meet yesterday in Wenatchee to beat Colville's and Chelan's #6 runners (47th and 42nd respectively) and win the tie-breaker for 3rd place after all three teams scored 97 team points by runners 1-5 in regulation.

Riverside (65 points) won the girls race and Omak (84 points) placed 2nd. Only three teams from the girls and three from the boys out of the regional advance to the state meet.

Officially the girls' scores were recorded as Riverside 64, Omak 81, Lakeside 93, Chelan 93 and Colville 94, with Lakeside recorded as winning the tie-breaker with Chelan.

Daniel moved up to the Eagles #6 position mid-way through the race when freshman Mikayla Presta, who has battled back from illness this season, was pulled from the course by Head Coach Steve Olson after she appeared to him to be injured.

Freshman Megan Ahrendt led the Lady Eagles, placing 6th overall with a time of 20:02.57. Junior Jess Mildes of Riverside won the girls' meet with a time of 19:21.23.

In addition to Daniel's efforts, Ahrendt was supported by sophomore state veteran Sofie Marikis (16th - 20:38.36), junior state veteran Vanessa Ahrendt (18th - 20:50.91), junior state veteran Morganne McCann (30th - 21:40.35) and junior newcomer Nicole Gomolski (31st - 21:45.55).

Lakeside girls had beaten Riverside in a league meet earlier this year, though Riverside standout Delaney McMahon was absent from that race. The Lady Eagles went undefeated in league meets to win the league title.

Meanwhile the boys, led by senior Colton Berry, ran away with their meet for the win, officially scoring 48 points to 2nd place Colville's 52 points and Cashmere's 96. Berry took 2nd overall in 16:09.61, supported by freshman standout Ryan Coffman (8th - 16:40.37), Michael Anderson (11th - 16:49.53), Ryan Rojeski (13th - 16:55.38), Mitch Middleton (14th - 17:01.72), Jake Widman (18th - 17:24.91) and Kyle Stoudt (47th - 18:46.21).

The state meet is in Pasco on Saturday, Nov 6th at the Sun Willows Golf Course.

Eagles football wins homecoming with 21-6 score!

The Lakeside Eagles hosted NEA member Newport Friday, Oct 22nd, for homecoming and won big, 21-6. The Eagles scored a touchdown in the 1st, 2nd and 4th quarters, and Tucker Fitzpatrick successfully kicked the PAT after each, for the 21 points.

The only score by the Grizzlies came on a 30 yard interception return in the 3rd quarter. Their PAT kick failed.

At half-time, homecoming royalty was carried down the track in classic convertibles and an el Camino and spirit competition judged. The class of 2012 (juniors), just as they have the last two years, once again won the coveted spirit award, bolstered by an imaginative circus-themed elephant-shaped shopping cart float driven by Bill Keegan on unicycle and led by gold-sparkling Princess Wormwood's awesome flaming baton twirling exhibition.

The gridiron win places Lakeside in 2nd place in league standings at 3-1 behind undefeated Colville Indians (4-0, 8-0), with the final regular season game at Freeman (1-3, 5-3) this Friday, October 29th at 7pm.

Lady Eagles futbol shuts out Rams again

The Lady Eagles soccer squad remains undefeated in NEA action after defeating Riverside last Thursday, Oct 14, by a score of 5-0. Lakeside blanked the Rams 6-0 in their first meeting on Sept 28th.

Fr Ashley Cook-Cox scored twice for the Eagles and was joined in goal by Brittos, Peters and Rubosky with one each.

The Eagles are on a five match winning streak after getting nicked with a 1-0 loss on a late goal at the 78:00 minute mark by Lewiston Sept 23rd and despite shooting 14 SOGS to 6 for the match.

Lakeside had 20 shots on goal compared to Riverside's four in Thursday's match.

The Eagles stand atop the NEA league with a 6-0 record, and improve to 9-4 overall after surviving a tough early non-conference schedule through the GSL.

Lakeside hosts Colville tomorrow afternoon, and then finishes up the 2010 regular season at Newport on Thursday, Oct 21st. Both matches start at 4pm.

Hosting Lakeside, Jenkins scored first for 6 points (missed the PAT), but then the Eagles tackled the Cougar QB in the endzone for a 2 point safety and scored their own 6 point TD (also missing the PAT) and that was enough scoring for the Lakeside Eagles football squad to win the game 8-6 Friday night, Oct 15th in Chewelah.

Lakeside is now 2-1 in league, 3-4 overall, and tied with the Cougars for second place behind undefeated Colville (4-0, 7-0).

The Eagles host Newport Friday, Oct 22, and then play a final league game at Freeman Oct 29.

The Lady Eagles traveled up Hwy 395 Thursday, Oct 14th, to face the Colville Lady Indians in volleyball action but came away with a loss after a tough 4 game battle.

Colville took the first game 25-21, but the Eagles came back and won the second 25-19. The Indians repeated the first game score with a 25-21 win, and then ran away from the Eagles with a 25-8 win in the 4th to win the match 3 games to 1.

The loss drops Lakeside to 3rd in league behind league-undefeated Colville (8-0, 15-1) and one-loss Freeman (7-1, 12-1). The Eagles stand at 5-3 league, 8-4 overall.

Lady Eagles XC dominates small school Bullpup Invite!

The Lady Eagles varsity cross country team took home the 1st place trophy in the small school division of the 5K Bullpup Invite at Finch Arboretum Saturday, October 9th with a score of 127. The scoring was good enough for 4th place overall in the eleven team field behind 4A GSL members Gonzaga Prep, Lewis and Clark and Central Valley, with scores of 68, 76 and 124 respectively.

The Eagles soared over 3A University (157), 1A Colville (158), 1B powerhouse Northwest Christian (194), 2A East Valley (202) and 4A (ID) Post Falls (242).

The Lakeside boys team, minus #1 standout sr Colton Berry, who was on a visit to the University of Washington, still grabbed the 2nd place trophy in small school with 123 points, behind Colville (117), whose #1 runner sr Colton Hastings won the boys' race with a time of 16:38.1. The boys were 6th overall, behind 4As LC, CV, Ferris and GP, and the Indians.

For the first time in school history, the Lady Eagles are ranked #1 in state in the 1A Coaches' Poll for Week # 6. Riverside bounced back up to its previous #2 ranking and Colville sits at #6. Northwest drops to #10.

The Lakeside boys remain at #3 behind Port Townsend and Charles Wright Academy in the state Coaches Poll. Colville is #4.

Football blanked at undefeated Colfax

Hoping to regroup after a tough loss to Colville with a foray into B-land, the Lakeside football squad instead ran into a buzzsaw at Colfax last Friday and boarded the charter coach for the return trip with a 27-0 loss.

Colfax, undefeated at 5-0 overall, 3-0 in Northeast 2B League, scored in every quarter, and shut down the Eagles' offense.

The loss takes Lakeside to 2-4 overall. The Eagles are currently in 4th place in NEA at 1-1 behind undefeated Colville (2-0, 6-0), Chewelah (2-0, 5-1) and Riverside (2-1, 4-2). Freeman (1-2, 4-2) and Newport (0-4, 0-5) round out the league standings.

Lakeside travels to Chewelah this Friday, October 15th to face the Jenkins HS Cougars and a chance to climb into a three-way tie for 2nd with a win.

Boys and girls XC win over Colville at Sontag Park

Despite illness racking the girls' team, both Lakeside cross country squads were able to pull out victories over the visiting Colville Indians at Sontag Park last night, and personal records were even set by many of the girls as they gear up to make a run to the state tournament, including by freshman Mikayla Presta and newcomer junior Nicole Gomolski.

A classic monster final finish was witnessed by spectators of the boys race as Lakeside senior Colton Berry and Colville senior Colton Hastings began their push about 400 yards from the finish line, coming out of the woods at full sprint speed and not letting up until passing through the cone chute.

The Clash of the Coltons was won by the Indian in split second time with a 16:23, his 5K career personal record, according to Athletic.net. While not published, Berry's finish was most likely a career 5K PR for him as well, with his previous best a 16:42 set as a 10th grader at the 2008 NEA Championships. He ran a 16:31.5 at Sunfair on October 2nd of this year, a 3 mile course.

Lakeside girls soccer hosted Newport last night and shut out the Lady Grizzlies 2-0 to take over first place in NEA League standings with a 3-0 record. Newport drops to 2-1 to stand at second in league.

The win improves the Eagles' overall win-loss to 7-4.

XC boys still ranked 3rd in state, girls move up to #2 in coaches poll

The Washington State Cross Country Coaches Poll #4, Week of Sept. 27th, shows the Lakeside girls ranked #2 in state for 1A, the highest ranking for girls XC in school history. The boys remain at #3 behind Port Townsend and Nooksack Valley.

Only Northwest School, with defending 1A individual champ jr Maddie Meyers, is ranked higher than the Lady Eagles, while new 1A NEA League member Riverside, formerly ranked #2 in 2010 pre-season through Week 3 polls, drops down to #7 in the latest poll. The Lady Rams took 8th in state last year in the Class 2A race.

Lakeside girls and boys teams both earned 4th place trophies at state last year and both look to challenge for a trophy spot this year as well with some serious freshmen runners providing fresh legs.

The Lakeside girls soccer team traveled to Colville last Thursday and beat the Indians 4-1 in a NEA league matchup that put the Eagles into a two-way league 2-0 tie for first with Newport.

The Grizzlies are 8-1 overall while Lakeside stands at 6-4 after a tough non-conference stroll through the GSL.

The Eagles host Newport Tuesday, October 5th to determine first place in league. Match time 4pm.

Colville remains undefeated with Lakeside win

The Colville Indians drove down 395 and kept right on driving through the Lakeside defense as they rolled to a 41-21 football win last Friday night in Suncrest to remain undefeated at 5-0 overall and tied for first place at 2-0 in league with the Jenkins HS-Chewelah Cougars, after dropping down to 1A Northeast A League from the 2A Great Northern League for the 2010-11 season.

The Eagles drop to 1-1 in league and 2-3 overall as they look for a break from A action by visiting 2B Colfax this coming Friday. Game time is 7:00 pm. Colfax is also undefeated, having stomped its four B opponents so far by a total 201 points to 67, including a 62-21 drubbing of Northeast 2B North rival Davenport.

Lakeside boys and girls XC win at Bear Lake

The Lakeside boys and girls cross country teams took on Riverside and Chewelah last Tuesday, September 28th at Riverside's home course Bear Lake County Park and both Eagles teams came away with a league win against both opponents.

Riverside girls took 8th place in the 2A state tournament last year and were expected to return a strong team again this year as a new NEA 1A member, but Lakeside's sister duo, fr Megan and jr Vanessa Ahrendt, came in first and second, bolstered by so Sofie Marikis, jr Morganne McCann and newcomer fr Mikayla Presta, to nip the Lady Rams 25 to 32.

Meanwhile, the boys dominated the field, with sr Colton Berry blistering the course with a 17:14.2, closely followed by freshman Ryan Coffman at 17:58.3. The pair took 1st and 2nd. Ryan Rojeski (18:16.5) and Michael Anderson (18:31.6) came in 4th and 5th, and Cody Constant (18:54.9) finished the team scoring for the Eagles with his 8th place finish, immediately followed by Mitch Middleton (19:02.10) and Kyle Stoudt (19:40).

Boys and girls XC take 2nd in small school division at Plantes Ferry

Saturday, September 25, proved to be another successful day for the LHS varsity boys' and girls' XC teams, writes team mom Nancy Glover-Berry in this week's Outpost. Both squads brought home second place trophies in the small school division (2A/1A) and had individuals who earned medals and ribbons as Overall Top 20 finishers in the Erik Anderson Memorial/Runners Soul Invitational.

According to Berry's article, a pair of extremely talented sisters led the LHS varsity girls' team to its second place victory behind small school winner 2A Cheney. Junior state veteran Vanessa Ahrendt medaled in 15th place overall with a time of 21:37.20. Freshman Megan Ahrendt earned a ribbon for 17th place with a time of 21:41.51.

Lakeside sophomore state veteran Sophie Marikis (26th, 22:31.86), junior state veteran Morganne McCann (38th, 23:11.31) and junior newcomer Nicole Gomolski (62nd, 24:22.24) helped score for the trophy team place.

Freshman Mikayla Presta battled back from an illness that hospitalized her immediately following the Farragut Invite Saturday the 16th, to come in 79th place (25:02.92) out of 121 varsity runners. Sophomore newcomer Mary Daniel, running her first varsity race, provided moral support in keeping pace with Mikayla, and finished 80th with a time of 25:02.18.

Senior state veteran Colton Berry led his varsity boys' team in a field of 139 runners to earn the small school second place trophy for Lakeside. Berry medaled in 5th place overall individual with a time of 16:48.88. Freshman Ryan Coffman had an outstanding race, coming in 22nd with a time of 17:48.63. He was followed by state veteran Ryan Rojeski in 33rd place (18:18.45); Cody Constant, 47th (18:33.11); Michael Anderson, 48th (18:35.67); Kyle Stoudt, 73rd (19:20.80) and Mitch Middleton, 81st (19:36.42).

Colville hands Eagles volleyball 1st league loss

Lakeside volleyball came out strong last night at home and defeated Colville 18-25 in the first game, but could not hold off the Indians' attack and lost the next three games to go 2-1 in league standings, 5-1 overall.

Colville moved to 3-0 to lead the NEA League, 8-1 overall.

Eagles futbol dominates Riverside 6-0

Allie McCann and Kasey Rubosky both scored twice, both once in each half, to lead the Lakeside Lady Eagles scorers in a 6-0 romp over former 2A Riverside this afternoon in varsity soccer action at Lakeside.

Michaela Brittos scored first at the 7 minute mark and Katie Baran scored at the 25 minute mark. Ashley Cook-Cox provided an assist to McCann's final score at 65 minutes.

Lakeside put up an unrelenting barrage of 40 shots on goal for the match, compared to the Rams' 3.

The win moves the Eagles to 2-0 in league, 5-4 overall.

Show down at Bear Lake

Lakeside cross country girls face a big test today to see which team might make a run to state as they go head to head with Riverside, a XC powerhouse formerly at the 2A level as part of the Great Northern League. The Lady Eagles meet the Rams and Jenkins HS-Chewelah at Riverside's Bear Lake County Park home course along Hwy 2 north of Spokane at 4:00 pm.

The boys also meet Riverside and Chewelah today, but there should be less drama in that race, as neither is expected to seriously challenge the Eagles. Both Eagles squads are ranked 3rd in state at 1A in the xc coaches pre-season and week 1 polls, despite both losing top runners from last year to graduation.

Riverside boys failed to qualify for the 2A state championships last year, while the Lady Rams took 8th at state in their division.

Both the Eagles boys and the girls varsity teams took 2nd in the small school (2A/1A) division at the Erik Anderson/Runner's Soul Invitational last Saturday at Plantes Ferry Park. Sr Colton Berry came in 5th overall individual in the boy's race with a time of 16:48.876, and sisters Vanessa (jr) and Megan (fr) Ahrendt placed 15th and 17th respectively on the girls' side overall individual with times of 21:37.204 and 21:41.511.

Football nicks Medical Lake in OT

The Lakeside Eagles visited Medical Lake last Friday, Sept 17th and took a win away from the league-independent Cardinals, 24-23 in OT. The Eagles are now 1-2 on the 2010 season after losses to 2A Great Northern League members Pullman and Deer Park.

They will visit NEA league newcomer Riverside this Friday, Sept 24th, in their first league matchup.

Fastpitch awarded 3rd place trophy at state

Lakeside fastpitch won their first game at state 5-3 against Nooksack Valley May 28th, but were sent to the consolation bracket in the second game by a May 29th shut-out loss to eventual second place finisher Cle Elum-Roslyn by a score of 3-0. This was Lakeside's 4th straight state appearance. The Eagles placed 3rd in 2007 and 4th in 2008.

Lakeside sophomore lefty pitcher Vanessa Ahrendt (21-3 '10 season, 39-8 HS career) shut out Cle Elum (10-0 league) for the first 6 innings but could not hold off a 7th inning surge by the Warriors. Lakeside batters could only manage one hit off Cle Elum's own junior lefty pitcher, Hailey Bator, who closed the door with a devastating rise ball.

Cle Elum beat the two-time defending state champion Montesano Bulldogs in the first game 2-1 to face District 7 No. 1 seed Lakeside.

The loss deflated the Eagles, who let Warden score 7 unanswered runs in the first two innings of the 3rd game. The Lady Eagles finally shook the funk and tied it with 7 runs of their own over the fifth and sixth innings.

Lakeside senior firstbaseman Lauryn Bassen hit a home run in the skirmish, but the Warden centerfielder ran through and knocked over the home run fence and the umpires inexplicably ruled the hit a double, erased two runs, and made her return to second base and made junior thirdbaseman Kayla Sevier return to third.

The score remained knotted until the top of the ninth when Warden freshman batting leader Iris Rodriquez smashed her second home run of the game, a 2 run RBI, but the Eagles responded with 3 runs of their own in the bottom frame to walk off with the win, 10-9.

A rainy weekend caused the remaining consolation bracket to be cancelled, so all six 1-loss participants were awarded a 3rd place trophy, including Lakeside.

Cle Elum lost in the title game to Castle Rock by a score of 7-3.

Lakeside fastpitch District 7 #1 seed to state tournament!

The Lady Eagles run-ruled Kettle Falls 12-1 in 6 innings in the first round of the District 7 1A fastpitch tournament Saturday to enter the title round versus Freeman, first round winners over Jenkins-Chewelah.

Lakeside then defeated the Scotties 11-6 to earn the District 7 championship and No. 1 seed to the state tournament in Pasco this Friday-Saturday. The Eagles will be joined by the Jenkins Cougars, who defeated Freeman 15-8 in the battle for the No. 2 seed.

2010 1st Team All-Conference sophomore catcher Savannah Rolston hit a 2 run RBI home run in the title game in contributing two of the Eagles' 14 hits. Junior short stop Michaela Brittos had 3 hits, 2 of which were double baggers. Two time 1st Team All-Conference sophomore pitcher Vanessa Ahrendt had 13 strikeouts, including 3 straight in the bottom of 7 to end Freeman's final scoring opportunity.

Freshman rightfielder Lauren Gerty, freshman pinch hitter Nikki Tiffany and junior centerfielder Emily Lesser each notched 2 hits in the title game. One of Lauren's was a double.

All-Conference certificates and medals were handed out between games. Senior first baseman Lauryn Bassen joined Savannah and Vanessa for her second all-conference 1st team award and Michaela made 2nd team for the second year in a row. She was joined on 2nd team by senior leftfielder Michele Dezihan and junior third baseman Kayla Sevier.

Our own Chuck Moffatt was awarded District 7 1A Softball Coach of the Year.

Five home runs were hit by Eagles against Kettle Falls, including 3 in a row. Kayla, Savannah, Nikki, Vanessa and Michele all launched one over the 200' homerun fence as one of their two hits on the game. Kayla and Nikki both had a double as their second hit.

The Bulldogs could only manage 3 hits, and aided the Eagles run production with 4 errors.

Saturday's fastpitch District 7 1A tournament to be held at West Valley HS

With the 4A fastpitch regional tournament venued at University High School Saturday, the District 7 1A tournament will be held at West Valley High School May 22nd.

Winner of tonight's playoff game between Kettle Falls and Newport will face our No. 1 seed Lakeside Lady Eagles at 11am on Field 1, while No. 3 Chewelah battles No. 2 Freeman on Field 2.

If the bracketing follows a typical 4 seed district tournament format, winners of game 1 and game 2 will face off for the District Championship and No. 1 District 7 seed to state at 1pm, while losers of game 1 and game 2 will play an elimination round game 4 at 1pm for the right to face the loser of the title round in a battle for the No. 2 and final seed to state.

But the bracket is not published at either 9mile.org or nealeague.org or spokesman-review.com websites, so we wait and see how it really goes when we get there.

District 7 No. 1 Lakeside-9 Mile Falls will face District 1/2/3 No. 5 Seattle Christian at 1pm on the Larson Playfield in Moses Lake Saturday, May 22 in first round action. District 7 No. 2 Jenkins-Chewelah will take on District 5 No. 2 Goldendale at 1pm at Recreation Park, Wenatchee.

In other first round games, Onalaska faces Cedar Park Christian, Chimacum takes on Castle Rock, Cascade Christian takes on Rochester, Montesano faces Meridian, the winner of Kiona Benton/Columbia Burbank game to be played tonight faces Cashmere and Cascade takes on Naches Valley.

The regional first and second rounds are single elimination. The second round is played immediately after the first round games are completed. If Lakeside wins, it will face the winner of the Cascade/Naches Valley game.

The four winners of the second round move on to the semifinals Friday, May 28th at County Stadium, Yakima, to determine 1st through 4th place in state. The two winners of the semifinal round will play for the state championship on Saturday at 4pm.

Chewelah lost to top seed and district tournament host Lakeside 2-0 May 15 in the District 7 championship game to settle for the No. 2 seed to state after barely surviving Newport 6-5 earlier in the day. Newport upset No. 2 seed Freeman 7-6 in second round district action Saturday to eliminate the Scotties from the state trip after barely losing to Lakeside in first round district action Wednesday, May 12th by a score of 9-8.

Fastpitch wins regular season title to earn top seed at districts

Sophomore pitcher Vanessa Ahrendt got the win in the first game and the save in the second of a doubleheader against Kettle Falls to up her season win-loss record to 17-2 as Lakeside secured the NEA League championship Saturday, May 15th at Lakeside.

Vanessa homered in the first game to bring in 3 runs as the Eagles pounded the Lady Bulldogs 19-2 in a mercy-ruled 4 innings. Sr LF Michele Dezihan blasted a triple in her two hits, while jr 3B Kayla Sevier smacked a double in her two. They were bolstered by singles from fr PH Nikki Tiffany, jr CF Emily Lesser, jr SS Michaela Brittos and sr RF Katie Tiffany. The Eagles pounded 9 hits to KFs 3 in the first game, with their 19 runs aided by multiple walks and 3 errors by the Bulldogs.

Freshman pitcher Nikki Tiffany started the second game, but severly twisted an ankle aggressively running out a hard-hit double in the bottom of the 4th, and Vanessa had to return to the circle nursing a sore rib muscle. She shut out KF the final three innings as Lakeside ended the regular season with a 2-1 win and an 11-1 league record for the title. Nikki was awarded the win for her 4 innings of great pitching that included numerous strikeouts.

Both teams could only manage 4 hits each in the second game, as Kettle Falls also started their own freshman pitcher, Krislin McInelly, brought up from JV for the game. The freshmen battled impressively in the circle. Michele Dezihan was the game changer, pounding an RBI triple in the second game, her second of the day. Fr SS Lauren Gerty and Emily Lesser finished out the hitting with a single apiece for Lakeside as the game went a full regulation 6-1/2 innings.

Lakeside finishes the regular season with an 11-1 league record and 18-2 overall. The Lady Eagles' only losses were to fellow league member Freeman and 2A Riverside. Freeman finished 10-2 in league, with both league losses coming by way of Lakeside.

The Eagles now have top seed in the District 7 tournament Sat. May 22 at University High School that decides the two district entries to the 1A state tournament Friday and Saturday, May 28-29 at Pasco, Washington.

Fastpitch knocks off previously unbeaten 2A Colville!

After having a 15 game win streak broken at fellow NEA league member Freeman (8-2, 15-4) Tuesday in a 3-2 loss in 10 innings, 1A Lakeside turned around and did the same to Great Northern league leader and previously unbeaten 2A Colville Thursday, defeating the Lady Indians at home also by a score of 3-2 in regulation.

Before the loss, Colville was the only undefeated A level team in the region. Lakeside had not beaten Colville in over a decade. The win takes the Lady Eagles to 16-2 overall and drops Colville to 14-1.

Lakeside is now 6-1 against higher level teams, with the 3-1 opening day loss at Riverside being the only blemish. Three of those teams lead their respective leagues, including IEL 4A (ID) Lakeland (5-1 league), Intermountain 3A (ID) Timberlake (9-1 league) and GNL 2A (WA) Colville (12-0 league).

As in Tuesday's game, neither team could string together more than one run in any inning, despite Colville clobbering 8 hits and Lakeside 7, scattered over 6-1/2 innings.

Colville jumped ahead early with 1 run each in the first and second innings, but were shut out the remaining five by Lakeside's sophomore all-conference pitcher Vanessa Ahrendt, who threw a mix of riseballs, curves, drops and change ups that kept the hard-hitting Indians off-balance. The win improved her season record to 16-2.

Lakeside scored one run each in their half of the 2nd, 5th and 6th innings, resorting to small ball in the later innings to load the bases, move around the runners for the scores and secure the win. Sophomore catcher Savannah Rolston had two blocked plate put-outs that stonewalled two separate Colville scoring threats, one requiring Savannah to extricate her arms and glove from underneath the sprawled out Indian third baseman Jolene Rodgers to show the home plate umpire she held on after a wicked collision.

Lakeside batters faced the duo of hard-throwing seniors 1st-team all-GNL Makayla Carr and strong reliever Alison Holst (4th inning), but jr 3B Kayla Sevier and jr SS Michaela Brittos were able to get 2 hits each to lead the Eagles hitting. They were joined by Rolston, fr RF Nikki Tiffany and Ahrendt with 1 hit each. Colville's catcher Hamilton was the only batter in the game to hit for extra bases, a triple, and the only Indian to get more than 1 hit.

Colville and fellow GNL member Riverside drop down to 1A next year to join Lakeside in the Northeast A League. Kettle Falls drops to 2B.

Freeman ends Fastpitch win streak

It took 10 innings, but the Freeman Scotties finally ended Lakeside's fastpitch 15 game win streak this afternoon with a 3-2 victory, to improve their own league record to 8-2 and send Lakeside to 9-1.

Freeman's knock off of the league leader completes their regular season schedule on a high note, while Lakeside still faces undefeated Great Northern League leader 2A Colville (12-0, 14-0) Thursday and then finishes the league regular season schedule with a doubleheader at home against Kettle Falls.

Despite Freeman recording 8 hits and Lakeside 9, neither team could string together their hits for multiple runs. Freeman outfielders' speed and trusty gloves stymied the payoff of the Eagles long ball hitting while Freeman's threats were neutralized by the Lakeside pitcher's clutch 14 strikeouts.

Lakeside scored one run in the first, but Freeman answered in the second for a 1-1 tie, then went ahead 2-1 in the 4th but were rebuffed by a Lakeside score in the 5th for a 2-2 tie that stood for four more innings, until Freeman batters took advantage of a walk, an error and an "uh-oh" fastball for the walk-off winning score in the bottom of the 10th.

So pitcher Vanessa Ahrendt and sr 1B Lauryn Bassen led the Eagles with 2 hits each, with Lauryn smashing the only triple of the game. So DP Savannah Rolston, so PH Kayla Bennett, fr RF Nikki Tiffany, sr LF Michele Dezihan and jr SS Michaela Brittos each contributed a hit, with Michele ripping a double.

The good spectator turn-out on both sides was rewarded with a level of competitive play indicative of what a post season run to the state tournament would present for both teams. It should be awesome!

The Lady Eagles hosted Newport Friday, May 7th and run-ruled the Lady Grizzlies 10-0 in 6 innings. Sophomore pitcher Vanessa Ahrendt improved her season record to 15-1 with the 7th shut out of 2010. Freshman reliever Nikki Tiffany got the save with two strikeouts in the top of the 6th.

Eagles batters rang up 12 hits, including a home run apiece for sr all-conference 1B Lauryn Bassen, her 6th of the season, and so C Savannah Rolston, her second. Fr PH Lauren Gerty, Tiffany, Bassen, Rolston and jr SS Michaela Brittos each had 2 hits. Sr RF Katie Tiffany and jr CF Emily Lesser both added a single.

Lakeside is now 9-0 in league. The Eagles could clinch the regular season title with a win at Freeman (7-2 league, 12-4 overall) Tuesday, May 11th.

Jenkins HS Cougars of Chewelah visited Lakeside Tuesday, May 4th and were mercy-ruled in 5 innings by the Lady Eagles, losing 11-1. They managed only 4 hits, all singles, while Lakeside batters blasted 12 hits off veteran Cougars pitcher Stephanie Huguenin, including three extra baggers.

Lakeside Jr 3B Kayla Sevier, so C Savannah Rolston and fr RF Nicole Tiffany each had 2 hits. They were joined by fr PH Lauren Gerty, sr 1B Lauryn Bassen, so P Vanessa Ahrendt, jr DP Emily Lesser and so SS Michaela Brittos with 1 hit each. Sevier and Ahrendt each blasted a triple while Lesser recorded a double.

The Eagles are now 8-0 in league, 14-1 overall. They host Newport, 0-6 in league, 2-9 overall, this Friday, May 7th at 4:30pm.

The Lady Eagles softball team traveled to Kettle Falls yesterday afternoon and blanked the Lady Bulldogs 10-0 in 7 innings to extend their league record to 7-0. Lakeside is now 13-1 on the 2010 season.

Sophomore all-conference 1st team pitcher Vanessa Ahrendt recorded 14 strikeouts in her 6th shut out of the season, a one hitter.

Sophomore catcher Savannah Rolston led the Eagles hitting with two doubles. Ahrendt also smacked a two-bagger as one of her two hits. Freshman second-baseman Kirsten Kyllo, jr centerfielder Emily Lesser and jr all-conference 2nd team shortstop Michaela Brittos all contributed a single apiece to add up to the Eagles' total seven hits.

Lakeside hosts Chewelah Tuesday May 4th at 4:30pm and then Newport Friday May 7th at 4:30 p.m.

The Freeman Scotties visited Nine Mile Falls Saturday, April 24th for softball doubleheader action and lost both games to the Lakeside Lady Eagles by scores of 10-4 and 11-0. Freeman drops to 2-2 in league, 7-4 overall, while Lakeside improves to 6-0 league, 12-1 overall.

Jr 3B Kayla Sevier led the Eagles with 4 hits in the first game, including a triple. Sr 1B Lauryn Bassen hit a homerun, her 4th of the season. Fr DH Lauren Gerty had 2 hits, while so P Vanessa Ahrendt, sr LF Michele Dezihan and jr CF Emily Lesser added a single each.

Ahrendt went the distance in both games, getting a 1 hit shut out in the 5 inning, run-ruled second game to go 12-1 on the season. It was her 5th shut out of the year.

The shut out was preserved in the top of the seventh when Lesser, fielding a fly ball, rocketed a perfect throw from centerfield to a waiting Gerty, playing catcher in the second game, for a tag out on a Freeman runner attempting to score from third.

So Savannah Rolston, playing DH, led the Eagles in the second game with 3 hits, including a triple. Dezihan added 2 hits to go with singles by Gerty, Ahrendt, fr 2B Miranda Brittos and jr SS Michaela Brittos.

Lakeside travels to Kettle Falls (1-3 league, 3-6 overall) Tuesday, April 27th.

Fastpitch overcomes Timberlake 9-3

The 3A (ID) Timberlake Lady Tigers (6-8) of Spirit Lake, Idaho scored twice in the opening frame against host Lakeside, but the Lady Eagles scored nine times before the visitors notched a final run in the top of the 7th, to go home with a 9-3 loss to the 10-1 1A softball team from Nine Mile Falls, Washington, Thursday, April 22nd. Timberlake beat Lakeside last year 6-5 in Spirit Lake.

Lakeside got to the Tigers starter Cameron in every inning and then beat up on reliever Malloy who came in the 4th and was twice hit by line drives back up the middle. The Eagles scattered 11 hits to the Tigers 7, as Lakeside sophomore pitcher Vanessa Ahrendt went the distance.

Jr 3B Kayla Sevier and so C Savannah Rolston each stroked a triple in their 2 hits each and sr 1B Lauryn Bassen hit the lone double. Sr LF Michele Dezihan and jr SS Michaela Brittos also had 2 hits each. Fr DH Lauren Gerty and Ahrendt also had 1 single apiece.

Fastpitch blanks Newport twice

The Lady Eagles traveled to Newport yesterday and shut out Newport in both games of the weeknight doubleheader, 12-0 and 24-0. Both games lasted only 5 innings by mercy rule.

Sophomore pitcher Vanessa Ahrendt threw a no-no in the first game and gave up only 1 hit in the second, a double by Newport's Bulling. Lakeside senior 1B Lauryn Bassen vindicated the hit with a bases clearing grand slam homerun in the fifth.

Fr DH Lauren Gerty, sr RF Emily Lesser and jr SS Michaela Brittos each had two hits in game one, with Gerty smacking the lone double. Catching the second game, she led the Eagles hitting with 4 hits, joined by jr 3B Kayla Sevier and Bassen with 4 each, Brittos with 3, and so DH Savannah Rolston, Ahrendt, sr LF Michele Dezihan and fr 2B Kirstie Kyllo with 2 each. The Eagles had 12 hits in game 1 and 20 in game 2.

Ahrendt went the distance in both games, unofficially ringing up 23 strikeouts over the 10 frames. She has thrown 4 shut outs this season, including a perfect game against Cedar Park Christian on March 26th.

Lakeside hosts 3A (ID) Timberlake of Spirit Lake, Idaho tomorrow, April 22nd, at 4pm and then takes on Freeman Saturday, April 24th in doubleheader action starting at 11am.

Fastpitch takes two from Chewelah

When the strike zone shrinks, the hits grow, and that's what happened this afternoon when the Lakeside Lady Eagles battled the Jenkins HS Cougars in Chewelah, outhitting them 13-8 in the first game and 12-8 in the second.

The visiting Eagles better capitalized on their hits, however, and scored 11 runs to the Cougars' 1 in the first game, and 14 runs to the Cougars' 4 in the second to sweep the two game outing, to start league play 2-0 and bringing their season overall record to 7-1.

The Eagles were aided by 6 Cougar errors in the first game and 7 in the second. Lakeside recorded 1 error on the day.

So C Savannah Rolston, so P Vanessa Ahrendt, jr RF Emily Lesser and jr SS Michaela Brittos each had two hits in the first game for the Eagles. They were joined in the hitting by fr DH Lauren Gerty, jr 3B Kayla Sevier, sr 1B Lauryn Bassen, sr LF Michele Dezihan and fr 2B Miranda Brittos with 1 hit each.

In the second game, battery-mates Rolston and Ahrendt stroked 3 hits each. Rolston came close to hitting for the cycle with a single, a double and a triple. Ahrendt finished it for her with a homerun that was facilitated by the Jenkins centerfielder dropping to the ground with an injury as she chased the ball. The official book failed to record the HR, likely with attention diverted out of concern for the downed fielder. The two were joined by Gerty and Dezihan with 2 hits each, and fr PH Nicole Tiffany and Michaela Brittos with 1 each.

Lakeside visits Newport next Tuesday, April 20th.

Fastpitch shuts out 2A West Valley

The Lakeside Lady Eagles shut out the visiting 2A West Valley Eagles last night 4-0 in non-league home softball action to take their 2010 season record to 5-1. So pitcher Vanessa Ahrendt gave up only 1 hit and unofficially notched 10 strikeouts. This was her second shut out of the young season after pitching a perfect game against Cedar Park Christian March 26th.

Lakeside hitters also came up with 5 hits off powerful senior all-league (GNL) hurler Rachel Meagley, who has committed to juco national #1 ranked Miami Dade College.

With Lakeside leading 3-0 in the bottom of the 4th, Sr 1B Lauryn Bassen blasted her second hit, a deep runner to the left field fence. Upon rounding 3rd, she was sent home by head coach Chuck Moffatt as the throw home was coming in. Meanwhile, the West Valley catcher had set up to block the base path several feet from home plate and Bassen was forced to bowl her over, knocking out the just arrived ball, and crossed the plate standing up. The home plate umpire had signaled a delay call of catcher obstruction on the play and Bassen was awarded an official in-the-park homerun.

Lauryn was joined in hits by Fr leadoff DP Lauren Gerty, So C Savannah Rolston and Jr SS Michaela Brittos, with a single apiece.

With only 1 out in the top of the 7th and two WV runners threatening to score from 2nd and 3rd, the game ended on a 5-3-2 double play that rocked the grandstand -- Jr 3B Kayla Sevier took a short grounder, looked back the runner on 3rd, fired to 1B Bassen for the force, who then rocketed the ball to C Rolston. The sophomore catcher, giving free lessons on how to do it right, blocked the plate perfectly for a solid tag on the delayed score attempt.

The weather was awesome, the crowd enthusiastic and the game, incredible. Great job, Lady Eagles!

Fastpitch blasts Cheney in home opener

The Lakeside Lady Eagles won the battle of batting strategies against 2A Cheney Wednesday afternoon in their fastpitch home opener in front of an overflow crowd at Lakeside varsity softball field, plating 20 runs to the Blackhawks' 2 in a 5 inning run-ruled game that lasted over 2 hours.

Faced with a parsimonious strike zone, opposing pitchers had to grope for payoff corner. The Blackhawks' pitchers, starter Lane and reliever Mandy McDowell (3rd inning), relied on blasting the bulls-eye with fastballs, while the Eagles' pitcher, sophomore Vanessa Ahrendt, continued to mix it up with speed changes and movement in the narrowed target. Cheney batters decided to try waiting out the calls, while Lakeside batters came out swinging, resulting in their barrage of 16 hits to Cheney's 4. The score was 12-1 after 2 innings and 17-1 after 3.

Sophomore catcher Savannah Rolston led the Eagles with 3 hits. Fr PH Lauren Gerty, Sr 3B Kayla Sevier, Sr 1B Lauryn Bassen, Ahrendt and Jr SS Michaela Brittos each had 2 hits. They were joined by Sr LF Michelle Dezihan, Fr DP Kirstie Kyllo and Fr 2B Miranda Brittos with 1 each. Rolston and Bassen each stroked a triple.

The Lady Eagles are now 4-1 and looking to take on a strong 2A West Valley squad at home next Wednesday, April 14th, led by 1st Team all-GNL senior pitcher Rachel Meagley, who has committed to junior college national powerhouse and No. 1-ranked Miami-Dade College.

The Lady Eagles softball team traveled to Bothel Friday and shut out Cedar Park Christian 11-0 in a 5 inning run-ruled game under the lights of Inglemoor High School field. They then beat 2A Aberdeen 3-1 Saturday afternoon at beautiful Husky Softball Stadium overlooking Lake Washington on the campus of the University of Washington.

Sophomore pitcher Vanessa Ahrendt threw a perfect game against CPC, going 2 for 4 with 4 RBIs and 9 strikeouts. She also recorded 9 strikeouts against Aberdeen.

Senior 1B Lauryn Bassen joined Vanessa with 2 hits Friday, aided by 1 hit each by freshman PH Lauren Gerty, senior 3B Kayla Sevier, freshman 2B Miranda Brittos and junior SS Michaela Brittos. Ahrendt and Sevier each hit a double.

On Saturday sophomore C Savannah Rolston led the Eagles batters with two hits. Gerty, Sevier, Ahrendt, senior LF Michelle Dezihan and freshman 2B Kirsten Kyllo had one hit each in the game.

With Lakeside trailing 1-0 with two outs and two runners on in the bottom of the 6th inning, Dezihan drove a ball deep to the purple left field wall past a charging fielder to bat in the 2 runners, and then beat the throw by legging out an unofficial in-the-park homerun, giving the Eagles a 3-1 lead and the eventual win.

Lakeside is now 3-1 on the season.

Fastpitch wins at Lakeland

The Lady Eagles softball squad bounced back from an opening day loss at Riverside Tuesday by beating a hobbled Lakeland 7-2 Thursday on the road at Rathdrum, Idaho. Lakeland gave Lakeside their opening day loss last year by a score of 10-7.

After struggling at the plate in their first game, the Eagles woke up their bats and sprayed a barrage of 16 hits to Lakeland's 7. They also officially recorded no errors to the Hawks 4. Lakeside sophomore pitcher Vanessa Ahrendt evened her season record to 1-1 with the win, and unofficially notched 7 strikeouts on the game, according to a partisan spectator.

The Hawks were minus their two varsity pitchers. Jamie Klopatek is out after having her tonsils removed, and Ashley Metcalf has a pinched nerve in her shoulder, according to the Coeur d'Alene Press sports report from today. Kristen Klopatek was brought up from JV for the game.

Freshman 2B Kirstie Kyllo led the Eagles with 4 hits. Freshman lead-off PH Lauren Gerty joined junior 3B Kayla Sevier, Ahrendt, junior RF Emily Lesser and junior SS Michaela Brittos with 2 hits each. Senior 1B Lauryn Basson and sophomore C Savannah Rolston had 1 hit each.

The Lady Eagles travel to Bothel, Washington today for a 6:00 pm game against Cedar Park Christian at Inglemoor High School field, and then play 2A Aberdeen at Husky Softball Stadium on the campus of the University of Washington tomorrow at 1:00 pm.

Fastpitch loses at Riverside to start 2010 season

The Riverside Lady Rams beat Lakeside Tuesday 3-1, after losing their first game to NEA League member Chewelah 5-2 March 16th. The Rams are now 1-1 while Lakeside starts the season in the hole at 0-1.

Sophomore pitcher Vanessa Ahrendt gave up 8 hits while the Lady Eagles could only manage 3 hits on the Riverside pitcher. Senior Lauryn Bassen scored the only run for Lakeside with a solo homer. Freshman pinch hitter Lauren Gerty and senior Michelle Dezihan had the other two hits for the Eagles.

Lakeside beat Riverside last year 16-6.
